Born in 1677, Arnoldus Westerhovius was a theologian, poet, historian and scientist.  He loved collecting books and possessed an extensive library consisting of works from diverse fields of knowledge.  From this base he went on to author a remarkable book titled Hieroglyphics or symbols of the ancient peoples: namely Egyptians, Chaldeans, Phoenicians, Jews, Greeks, Romans, etc. Published in 1735, it was illustrated by the work of Romeyn de Hooghe, an important engraver of the time.  We offer a small selection of images from this remarkable work.
