Pieter Cramer was an eighteenth century linen merchant and one of the first lepidopterists as well. Utilizing his great wealth he assembled an extensive natural history collection that included examples of moths and butterflies from around the world. Cramer later hired the painter Gerrit Wartenaar to document his collection and these illustrations became the basis for the book Papillons Exotiques published in 1775.
