René Primevère Lesson was a naturalist and explorer who travelled widely around the world in the early nineteenth century.  Given his scientific background matched to his field work he was well situated to produce several great works including the first work of note on hummingbirds that predated John Gould’s masterpiece by several decades and another work that documented the birds of paradise of Papua New Guinea.  Our images are taken from the work entitled The Natural History of Hummingbirds or Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux-Mouches published in 1829.  The 5x7 card is blank inside and comes with an accompanying envelope - shipping is free.
